Ovulation occurs on only one day in a cycle. It cannot occur again after progesterone levels begin to rise. Progesterone prevents more than one ovulation from occurring in one cycle. It is possible for more than one ovum to be released at ovulation as the birth of non-identical twins and triplets prove. However, when more than one ovum is released in a cycle, they are be released within the same 24 hour time period.

When the ovum is released from the ovaries it is picked up by the fringed (fimbriated) end of the fallopian tube. It travels about one third of the way along the fallopian tube, where it awaits fertilization.

Once ovulation occurs, the ovum lives 12-24 hours. If it is not fertilized, it dies. Because this time is so short very few women would become pregnant if the life span of the ovum were all that mattered. This is where the role of cervical mucus comes into play.

Sexual stimulation will not cause a woman to ovulate. Nor can a woman ovulate more than once in a cycle.
